Empty Nesting: Reinventing Your Marriage When the Kids Leave Home
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass (26 November, 2001)
Authors: David H. Arp, Claudia S. Arp, Scott M. Stanley, Howard J. Markman, and Susan L. Blumberg
Average review score:

Make the rest the best!
One word describes this book: OUTSTANDING! Given these two statistics: (1) Every seven seconds, a baby boomer turns age 50, and (2) the divorce rate is up 16 percent for marriages of 30-plus years, this book is a MUST READ for all couples who fall into the empty nest/second half marriage category. Don't let the word "fighting" in the title make you think for a minute that this book is only for couples whose marriages are on shaky ground. It is for ALL couples wanting to build, keep, or return to a great relationship.

This book is the best of the best. It is the best of the book The Second Half of Marriage by David and Claudia Arp in which they identify eight challenges every marriage in the second half faces. And, it is the best of the strategies and techniques of the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP) developed by Stanley, Markman, and Blumberg. Not only do the authors suggest powerful, yet simple, ways couples can upgrade their communication and conflict resolution skills, they also stress the importance of building couple friendship, having fun, becoming empty nest lovers, and keeping the relationship strong.

Do you want the rest to be the best? READ this book!

Just the two of us again
Although we are an empty nest couple, it doesn't seem that way with the pets we inherited from the kids when they moved out. We have 3 cats, 1 dog and an iguana to keep us busy now. I think the kids were easier to raise!

This great book isn't just for couples who have a truly empty nest. Many midlife couples today find that their nests get refilled with boomerang adult kids, aging parents, visits from kids and grandkids, or grandkids on a full time basis.

I liked the section on how to learn about the danger signs of behaviors that can lead couples who have been married for decades to the divorce court. There is also good information on the major issues that midlife couples need to deal with in order to have a strong marriage.

Enchantment
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 2001)
Author: Orson Scott Card
Average review score:

this is the best book ever
this is a must read for any fans of any type of fiction.if you havent read it yet do it. it is basicly a aternate sleeping beuty book but very diffrent than normal. thats ill say and let the book say the rest.

Learn the unspeakable truth hidden in Russian folklore
Not a typical Card book, but then, what exactly is a "typical Card book"?
It starts with a beautiful portrayal of a Jewish Boy growing up in Russia, moves to some gritty "it-sounded-good-in-theory" fantasy, which in turns alternates with fairy-tale fantasy. The fairy-tales are appropriately Russian, and along the way the truth behind many classical Russian folklore stories is revealed.
Yes, it's as funny as it sounds.
Add to that great Orson Card characters, and the strength his moral believes often lend to his books, and you get what would have been considered a masterpiece if written by anyone else. I haven't read his biblical series, but it compares well to his terrific "Hart's Hope" fantasy, blows his horror books out of the water, and is at least on par with his SF.

I can't believe no one noticed this book, maybe because it's mostly fantasy. Highly recommended, even to those who think they only like Card for his SF.

The End of Change: How Your Company Can Sustain Growth and Innovation While Avoiding Change Fatigue
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Trade (10 August, 2000)
Authors: Peter Scott-Morgan, Erik Hoving, Henk Smit, and Arnoud Van Der Slot
Average review score:

Packed With Knowledge!
If the wildly successful Who Moved My Cheese? represents the kindergarten version of basic change management theory, The End of Change makes a welcomed leap to graduate-level studies. Authors Peter Scott-Morgan, Erik Hoving, Henk Smith and Arnoud Van Der Slot maintain that many of the concepts intrinsic in the current genre of change management are just plain wrong. In reality, companies that successfully manage change do so by building structures specifically designed to induce and digest change into their overall organizations. In order to explain these structures, the authors present them in the form of geometric shapes - a metaphor that is easy to grasp and easily captures the essence of each strategy. These graphic examples are reinforced with real-life examples of companies and industries that manage change in ways that closely resemble the book's shape-based techniques. We [...] recommend that all executives and students read this book, which takes a sophisticated approach to a topic that has been addressed by a slew of authors and consultants-turned-authors on the most superficial of levels.

NOTHING IS AS PRACTICAL AS A GOOD THEORY
Excellent book which strongly stimulates the reader to re-think his own vested ideas about change, innovation and organizational structure. Unlike most "Management books" the End of Change is not a simple "How To" book, tediously listing endless recommendations with bullet points. Due to its compact and clear style this book offers a clear pathway to those trying to cope with relentless change - and who is not ?

Based on a clear and consistent methodology, the End of Change is in the end a very practical book - about people. Although this well structured book contains a lot of easy to be remembered slides and presentations - common in Strategy Consulting nowadays - its strenghts can also be found in its aforisms, examples and methaphors.

Besides other sources (not the least being the year long consulting experience of its authors), the End of Change further builts on Peter Scott Morgan's, "The unwritten Rules of the Game". The basic concepts of the End of Change enable the reader to deepen his insight in the dynamics of change in general - while giving him the opportunity to apply these to his own personal experiences and areas of business life which have been to much neglected in periods of serious change (for example, amongst many others, Recruting & HR policies)

For those who are interested how changing business environments effect our daily lives, this book is a " Must-Read".

Sanders' best fiction
In a world where people live in domes, and everything wild is outside, an orphan girl adopts as her parent the "Engineer of Beasts" -- an old man who keeps the "disney," where mechanical animals cuddle up to visitors. She dreams of real bears, though...but is there any way out of the disney?

Interesting!
This is a Unique Sci-Fi book! With cool characters, constantly changing action, and a cool twist at the end, anyone who likes futuristic books will love this one!!

Engineering Better Software Organization

Software Process Bible
I keep this book nearby at all times in my job. The chapter on configuration management provides a concise guide to formalizing and implementing a change control process.

Most organizations have lots of forms, but invariably lack a clearly articulated software process (that is easy to follow!).

This book is an excellent desk reference and should be the bible for any IT Manager.

Simple, easy to read and it works...
I needed information about process improvement fast! I bought this book and read it over a long weekend. By Monday I felt like an expert in strategic software process development and improvement. This is definitely the one book any manager can use to improve their operation and their own skills.

Esquire's Things a Man Should Know About Marriage: A Groom's Guide to the Wedding and Beyond
Published in Paperback by Riverhead Books (10 January, 2000)
Authors: Scott Omelianuk and Ted Allen
Average review score:

A great gift for a freind about to walk down the isle.
Although this is a humorous book, the advice it gives isn't bad. If you are getting married in the next year, definitely buy this book. It mostly gives humorous, but very true advice on weddings, wedding etiquette and married life.

It also gives some truly funny marriage advice like don't get so much life insurance that "you're worth more to them dead than alive....seriously watch your back."

So if you like the droll sensibilities of the editors Esquire Magazine and you're even remotely thinking of getting married, but this book. Think of it this way, even if you call off the wedding, this book is will still give you a few guffaws.

This book is HYSTERICAL!
I happened to find this book in a bookstore while browsing, and since I just had a good friend get engaged, I bought it for her new fiance. I was actually laughing out loud because while it provides current and valuable advice for the soon-to-be-groom, it does so with lots of humor and wit. This is a perfect gift for any newly-engaged guy...as my new husband often tells me, too many gifts are geared towards the female half of the couple, and it's only fair to get the guy something once in a while. Buy this book!

Everyday Spiritual Practice: Simple Pathways for Enriching Your Life
Published in Paperback by Skinner House Books (01 July, 2001)
Author: Scott W. Alexander
Average review score:

Don't Pass on This Book
A wonderful collection of ideas to help you implement spirituality into your life. There are several chapters that provide ideas on how one might include spirituality into daily living. Not every idea is going to appeal to every person, but there is enough variety and depth that everyone should come away with helpful ideas. This book is especially appropriate for persons who are willing to consider other avenues to spiritual living besides only Christianity.

Practical and Wise Advice
Everyday Spiritual Practice is for anybody who wants to deepen their spirituality, but isn't entirely sure how. Each chapter focuses on a particular spiritual practice (meditation, prayer, fasting, for example)offering an inroduction to the practice. Some things not typically understood as spiritual disciplines are included here, such as marriage, gardening, and cooking, giving the reader valuable insights into daily mindfulness. The recommended reading list provides further direction for seekers. Ptactical and wise, I highly recommend this book.

Exploring Oklahoma With Children!: The Essential Parents' Travel Guide
Published in Paperback by Inprint Pub Inc (June, 1997)
Authors: Sarah L. Taylor and Robbie Scott
Average review score:

Tried and True
I purchased Exploring Oklahoma with Children last year and was checking for a third edition. I will purchase a new one each time it is released. The price ranges are accurate and the book paints a true picture of the attraction/location. We have visited several places recommended in the book with a four year old and a twelve year old and never been disappointed. Directions, phone numbers, and extra tips are extremely valuable.

What are we going to do this summer?!!?
As the end of the school year was approaching this mother of five wondered what to do with our summer. Our family was born and breed here in Tulsa, Oklahoma, yet we had never seen many of the natural wonders this great state has to offer. I certainly did not look forward to a summer of "paying" to be entertained at the movies, water parks or (eeek) in front of the TV. Oklahoma is rich in its Native American heritage. With a state that suffered the "Grapes of Wrath" image and then overcame to be a rich oil capitol, surely we could be entertained here. I purchased a copy of "Exploring Oklahoma With Children" in May. After a brief review of the book, I knew I had stumbled upon the key to an eventful summer. I spent every night for a week highlighting sights and events. I committed to the children "field trips" two days a week using our book as our guide. To fully appreciate this you must understand that this summer our children were: 8, 7, 5 (twins) and 1. We had the summer of our lives! We saw an old fort, Pawnee Bill's home, Will Roger's birthplace, a dairy farm, a port, many museums, parks and much more. These were all child friendly and were cheap to FREE! Our summers will never be the same. This year we will go further than one hour from Tulsa (our limit with a 1 year old). As the book is revised and reprinted each year (chalked full of discounts and coupons) I will be first in line at Amazon Books to purchase "Exploring Oklahoma With Children". We all look forward to exploring Oklahoma year round with the help of author, Sarah Lowrey Taylor. We'll see you in Oklahoma!
